watch them build up a material tower

For Fall '09, most designers made one thing blatantly obvious - we're in a recession. Yes now is the time that we can't afford the luxurious goodness of what these designers once used to present to us; now's not even the time that we can fantasize about what could potentially be ours, because truth be told, our fantasies aren't becoming a reality any time soon. The message that designers have conveyed this year is (in the utmost passively accepting tone) "Hey, we're in a recession." Thus, with this in mind, designers have presented a less than impressive case. What designers should be conveying is "Hey, we're in a recession. So what? We're going to do the best that we can do." Frankly, I believe that this is what Christophe Decarnin has been delivering to us consistently. Balmain's Fall '09 collection oozes cut-throat confidence with the redefined razor-sharp shoulders, the perfect baggy t-shirt that embodies the perfect amount of Parisian-chic and the Audrey-esque black cropped cigarette pants. Decarnin counter balances this by re-introducing the black ballet flat with feminine bows and the right amount glamour with the help of sequins; the perfect way to say "We're confident, but we're realistic too." Though I love my staggering heels more than the next girl, it's refreshing to see that flats are just as edgy and (pardon me) sexy as a towering pair of heels. The best part about this collection? Stripes that don't look nauseatingly nautical or jail-break-esque.
